To get the location, open the Sandboxie Control by double clicking on the yellow kite tray icon from the notification area, drag any program and drop it to the Sandbox DefaultBox. Now right click on the Sandbox DefaultBox at the Control window and select “Explore Contents”. You should typically activate the monitor before any programs are running in any sandbox. Note that the Resource Access Monitor window blocks access to the Sandboxie Control main window, including its menu, so you will have to start sandboxed programs through the Tray Icon Menu. USING PIRIFORM’S RECUVA IN THUMBNAIL VIEW, I SCANNED EACH OF THE FOLDERS IN MY C: DRIVE.
This scan was performed outside of Sandboxie. I was looking for any pictures (*.jpg|*.png|*.raw|*.gif|*.jpeg|*.bmp|*.tif) in Recuva’s parlance that were produced on screen while operating under the supervision of Sandboxie while cruising the Internet. These pictures, that I did not expect to find outside of Sandboxie after Sandboxie’s files were deleted, appeared in Recuva’s scans
I refer to these pictures as my “the watch criteria” below. None of the watch criteria files were user saved. They were only displayed within the Sandboxie 'enclosed' browser (Firefox in my case).
The computer used for this work has only one hard drive naturally named the C: drive. This drive (C:) contained many folders. I scanned each of these folders separately using Recuva. The results of these scans produced only six files as matching my watch criteria. Here they are as Filename and Path. The duplicate was indeed a duplicate.

Having scanned EACH of the folders in C:, the above are the only files that fit the watch criteria.
I then scanned the complete C: “folder” as reported below…

Found 11030 files 756 of which satisfies the watch criteria.
Which means that 756 – 6 = 750 lay outside of the subdirectories on the C: folder.
I selected all of the 11030 files and requested that Piriform Recuva secure overwrite them all.
Recuva overwrote 5825 files in 10 minutes 36 seconds. File types not overwritten were…

As reported by Recuva. I then ran a scan on C: to verify the result of the overwrite. It bombed.

Found 10995 files of which a large number satisfies the watch criteria many of which were recognizable from the scan of C:* prior to the secure overwrite. I did not count each hit on my watch criteria. Piriform – you are not doing what you claim.
I am running Eraser on unused space on C:* to see if that program will get the job that Sandboxie should have been doing done. Eraser completed in 3 hrs. 7 min. with warnings. What warnings? Here is the entire log…

I then ran Recuva on C: again to see if Erase had done its job. It did.

Yes, there were two identical files (names) found. None of these files were found.
NOTE: The filenames did not represent the content of the six files.
Bottom Line: Sandboxie leaks pictures that Recuva can find and restore. I did not restore any of the files. If you are serious about using Sandboxie as a privacy program for photographic content – FORGET IT. After you “delete” Sandboxie’s files, run Eraser on all drives that Sandboxie can touch to finish the job.
I did not test for the other file types that Recuva can find BUT as far as Sandboxie’s privacy claims go – be careful.

When it comes to surfing the Internet or trying out new software on our systems, there’s always a risk that the software in whatever form may compromise the security of our personal data. Creating an environment that insulates our operating systems from potentially risky software/situations will reduce the margin for error..

Insulate your programs with Sandboxie

The concept of Sandboxie is pretty straight forward: instead of letting your programs have a free run of what and where they can write to your hard drive, you have the Sandboxie Transient Storage (Sandbox) key component acting as an intermediary each time you run a program from the Sandboxie environment. The program will read it’s necessary data, eg; program files, configuration settings from the registry etc. from their real location on the hard drive. Sandboxie makes it so that when the program running within a sandbox wishes to make a change to it’s data, the data is written to a corresponding (apparently identical) location within the sandbox – the program won’t know the difference. When you stop the program and exit Sandboxie, the program’s information is retained. Most importantly, the information is abstracted from your real system environment, so if you encounter a rogue program (malware or perhaps problematic beta software) running in a sandbox, any nefarious file-system activities will be rendered harmless to the operation of your system or data.

Using the Sandboxie Control Program, you can conveniently select your default browser, email client, as well as choose to run any other programs from under the default sandbox provided or create a new sandbox. The default view mode for the Sandboxie Control Program is the Programs View, which can be changed to the Files And Folders View, and is very useful for seeing exactly what is going on concerning sandboxed programs reading your system’s data, including files and registry entries and writing their data to the sandbox.

Recovery/Storage Of Program Data

A useful feature in Sandboxie is Quick Recovery. This feature allows you to select the Quick Recovery scan command, which will cause Quick Recovery to scan all locations marked as recoverable folders for any new/altered data. Any relevant data found during the scan is presented with it’s real location (non-sandbox) recovery destination options to either Recover To Same Folder or Recover To Any Folder as well as giving you the ability to specify new recoverable folders to include in future scans. Also, there is the Immediate Recovery feature, which will constantly monitor the designated recoverable folder locations for any new data which, once found will result in the Immediate Recovery dialogue box being presented with the same options; Recover To Same Folder or Recover To Any Folder, as with the Quick Recovery feature.

These recovery features are useful for backing up anything that you might actually value as a result of running programs in Sandboxie.

Deleting Sandbox Program Data

You have the ability to clear the data from your sandbox in the Sandboxie Control Program – doing so will invoke the Delete Sandbox dialogue window, giving you a last chance to recover your information before deletion. There is also the option to set Sandboxie to delete information automatically after the last of the sandboxed programs have been shutdown.

A great additional security measure for your system

Sandboxie is a great addition to the security of your system, creating a great testing environment for software you aren’t sure about, or perhaps are, but want to see what a suspected malware application is up to by looking under the Files and Folders View at what is being accessed. Sandboxie even provides the ability to prevent programs from reading certain data or registry keys by adding entries to the configuration file.
